MAKING YOUR CHOICE
There are many things to keep in mind when making a choice about residential care
When first considering whether to utilise a residential care service, arrange to visit as many different facilities as you can, and don't be afraid to ask questions. Familiarise yourself with the level and range of care and services available. This is important to avoid disappointment later. Get in contact with the Aged Care Assessment Team to determine the level of care you require.
Visit more than once at different times. Consider the staff, the facilities available and the activities offered. Look at the size of the rooms and the facility's location.
Ask important questions such as if your own doctor can visit and consider whether family and friends can easily visit and will they be made welcome?
If your preferred facility does not have a place available, don't be pressured into taking the first offer you receive. Stay in touch with the preferred facility for when a vacancy does arise.
While we strive to make the transition to residential care as smooth as possible, new residents and relatives may face challenges at coming to a new environment.
